Our house phone just got several calls from a pay phone at the Harris County Jail. A recording says the call is from an inmate. This happens every few weeks. I looked it up on Google and found this – it’s a scam. If you do answer, someone identifying himself as a sheriff’s deputy will tell you that you have a collect call from someone you’ve never heard of. Then he’ll tell you that you can get the collect-call charge taken off your bill by dialing *72 and some phone number. The *72 is the give-away – it’s call forwarding, and will forward your number to the phone number they tell you. Then you get to pay all the long-distance charges to that number when an inmate dials it. (If you do dial *72, just dial *73 to cancel out.)
